Ask Me Anything: CCYH Under New Management

At Operation Child Care Project (OCC Project), we are committed to keeping military families informed about child care programs that impact their daily lives. In our most recent Ask Me Anything live session, we discussed the latest updates to the Child Care in Your Home (CCYH) program, which has now transitioned to new management under Navy Child and Youth Programs (CYP).

Our speakers, Kayla Corbitt, Founder & CEO of OCC Project, and Sabrina Dalton, Case Manager, provided an in-depth look at how these changes affect military families and how to navigate the application process.

The CCYH program is a subsidy-based initiative that allows eligible military families to hire a private caregiver—similar to a nanny—with financial assistance from the Department of Defense. This program is particularly beneficial for families who have challenging work schedules, need care for infants, or require flexible child care solutions that traditional child care centers may not offer. While the program has seen notable improvements, including expanded eligibility to allow nanny shares and family members (excluding parents/guardians) as caregivers, there are still limitations. These include high costs, lengthy approval timelines, and geographic restrictions that leave some families without access to this option.

During the session, we broke down the history of the CCYH program, the challenges families face when hiring a private caregiver, and the tax and payroll complexities involved in employing a child care provider. We also highlighted the ideal family profile for this program, which includes dual-income households, families with at least one child under the age of five, and those who are comfortable managing the tax and payroll responsibilities that come with hiring an in-home caregiver. Additionally, we provided guidance on how to access OCC Project’s case management services for personalized support in navigating this process.
